Depends on the culture, really. A very hot place full of fire would definitely frighten a group of bronze age nomadic desert dwellers. Having limited options in cooling off combined with a fairly rigorous lifestyle, they probably witnessed heat exhaustion and even lethal heat stroke among their weaker members fairly regularly. A very cold, dark place full of ice would absolutely terrify the early original Germanic tribes (including my own - the Norse) since they did go through very brutal winters where it remains dark for months at a stretch. To this day people in Norway (my home country) are sometimes caught unawares by a sudden shift in the weather and are later found dead, having froze to death between their home and the barn. Dying of hypothermia, eternal cold and dark, is one of our greatest primal fears, so that's what the Nordic version of hell is described as. Nifelheim is a place of eternal dark and cold.
