i am getting leopard geckos if they have eggs do i need an incubator or is it fine to use the heat lamp? please answer! thanks
I personally just put mine in a small Tupperware container with a closed lid, no holes or anything and fill it about halfway with vermiculite or perlite (both can be found at reptile stores or garden stores, even like target or lowes) but if you cant get that, use moss. And mist it to where the humidity is about 60%, which is just damp, not soggy. Set the container on a heating pad and adjust the temp by putting more or less pieces of paper between the Tuppperware and the heating pad. Till its 80-89 deg. The hotter side will typically produce male, lower end producing mainly female. Only open the container every week or so to circulate the air, to keep in the moisture. Make sure before you put the eggs in, mark the tops with a pencil, pen or marker so you will know which side of the egg always needs to be facing up, if you flip it or it rolls or anything, the embryo will drown. If you have any more questions feel free to ask, and if you can manipulate a heat lamp to keep it at those temps, that works too. Just make sure the eggs are in an enclosed container.
I would actually get an incubator if you plan to hatch them but if you keep in mind that you could have 20 baby geckos and nowhere for them to go. A pet store usually wont take them and your friends definatly don't want 5 each!
you may candle the egg, it particularly is, to hold a pen mild on the alternative component of the egg, and notice what shade it is interior. Infertile eggs will purely be yellow. Fertile eggs initiate out with a purple shade, from the arriving up blood vessels, and then grow to be darker because of the fact the embryo grows right into a neonate, and then hatches. Incubation classes for leopard geckos, Eublepharus macularius, are between 38 and 40 5 days on the temperature you indicated. 60 days ability that the egg is likely undesirable, or that the embryo has died till now hatching. supply it a pair of days, yet then open it up. yet be arranged for the stench of the two a rotten egg, or the decay of an entire term embryonically ineffective leopard gecko. it could ensue for one in all those reasons (you need to use distilled water, no longer too lots water interior the substrate, do no longer enable the egg get bodily moist, etc.) Cheers
