What is the difference in all wheel drive and 4 wheel drive vehicles?

All wheel drive means the 4 wheels are always engaged and cant be shut off and 4 wheel drive or 4x4 means you can either lock in the front wheels for 4 wheel drive or unlock them for two wheel drive. all wheel is usually on sport cars or cars in general, most suv's or trucks are 4 wheel drive
