I use hardwood floors, leather furniture, and keep the cats off the bed. Then I do all the steps you talk about. I have a vacuum specifically meant to pick up hair and often wipe down the couch and other furniture with a rag to get anything I missed. I prefer the leather and hard wood as the hair does not stick and you get all of it in one cleaning, where with carpets and fabric furniture it tends to linger even with heavy cleaning. I get away with cleaning about once or twice a week with minimal hair in the house. Most ends up in corners behind furniture that can quickly be picked up or vaccumed.
