(If I remember correctly from my 8th grade Physics class last year) It's a point in space with an incredibly high density, which pulls in anything that comes near it. I don't think anyone is sure what happens when something gets pulled in, but whatever goes in doesn't come back out of the point. I think the core of the black hole is actually a black ball. (some people, or at least in the movies, believe that the black hole transports you to another point in time, or so far across the universe that you go back/forward in time without actually going back/forward in time)
