In the idea of sub genres who are the revolutionaries of traditional heavy metal? Iron maiden is said to be the creator of power metal and Metallica is said to be the creator of thrash metal. What about other subgenres such as progressive, death, melodic, glam, speed, industrial, black, metalcore, hardcore?

Not all metal is heavy metal. The term metal encompasses a wide assortment of genres (heavy metal, thrash metal, speed metal, death metal, melodeath, deathcore, nu-metal, glam metal, etc.)
Nu Metal, Death Metal ect are catergorized into a subgenre of rock, called Metal. Nu Metal, Death Metal, ect are all sub-subgenres of metal.
Metal is like a broad genre and then you have the su genres ( such as heavy metal, death metal, art metal, nu metal etc) Believe who you wanna believe though
Metal is an umbrella term for all the sub-genres of metal such as heavy metal, black metal, groove metal, viking metal etc etc etc. The reason your father says Heavy Metal is Metal is because it is the most generic Metal genre. In other words, your friends is right :)
