Question:

If i plug my HDMI cable?

If i plug my HDMI cable from my PS3 into my HD TV with 5.1 speakers will I get my 5.1 audio to work, or will I have to plug the PS3 in separately?

Answer:

If I understand the question right, you are good. HDMI is audio-video cable wrapped into one. Provided everything is plugged in sound should be fine. Volume control may come from several different sources. Best.
I don't personally own a PS3 but the HDMI cable is designed to carry up to 7.1 channels of audio information. Depending on your TV you will either get the 5.1 surround sound from the HDMI cable or you will need to connect the digital audio (toslink optical or coax digital) from the PS3 to the same connection on the TV. Look at the input area where you are connecting your PS3 to. If it has an HDMI connection for video games and no other inputs for audio, then all you need is the HDMI. If it has an optical or coax input, you will need both. You can also try connecting the PS3 to one of the HDMI inputs that is independent of all other connections. Each TV is different, some have as many as 3 - 4 HDMI inputs, 2 component, 1 - 2 A/V standard, and then a Gaming input. It all depends on your TV make and model. I would connect it to one of the HDMI inpurts and see if you are getting audio from the PS3. If the audio input comes through all the speakers and it sounds good and balanced, and natural. and you can hear the effects as if they are coming from behind (even though they are not) then you do not need any other cables.
Yes you will get your 5.1 sound but you need to go to your settings in ps3 and make sure your audio is set for your hdmi Happy gaming
