Because in about the year 300 ad the emperor Constintine decided to organize Christianity as a way to regain power over Rome. He decided which gospels would be included in the bible (declaring over 40 other gospels heresy) and gave all religious power to the church and the preists. At the time there was another group of Christians called the gnostics who also followed the teachings of christ but they believed that you did not need fancy churches and preists to worship God. They believed that you needed to develop a personal relationship with God and that churches and preists were unnecessary for this (this is also what Jesus taught by the way) but they were declared outlaws by the organized church and the Emperor of Rome. It had nothing to do with anything spiratual.. it is all about power and the churches like to have power.
