Probably no permanent damage although there is a possibility of that. I am sure it was painful to your cat's ears, as it would have been for most people too. Sounds like the poor guy is a bit traumatized. Don't chase after him around the house, just keep talking gently to him, telling him everything is okay. If he just wants to be left alone then leave him alone. Give him a little time to calm down, and reassurance of being in a safe place, and he should be back to normal before long. He will probably always be jumpy about the smoke alarm though.
