Old age, improper location (too close to a vent), small insects, temperature swings to name a few. I've seen new ones fail in less than a year. I have 7 in my house and I'm on the 2nd set in less than 10 years.

I'm going to take a shot and guess you have an Ionization Smoke Detector. If that is the case it should be replaced every 3 to 5 years. The ion sensor collects dust, residue from cooking grease, cigarette smoke, and are not trust worthy anymore. You can disconnect the detector and clean the sensor with a Q-Tip, but honestly, you should just replace it whole unit. The Photoelectric type do not have these problems.
