Question:

What makes Metal...well, Metal?

I hear people argueing over which bands are metal and which aren't and to be honest..have argued some myself. For Instance I hear Motley Crue and Poison and Warrent called quot;Hair Metalquot; a LOT, which are groups I have always considered to be quot;Glam Rockquot; or a Glammed up version of Hard Rock. Then I see paople say bands like Slipknot (which I don't like.. but not the point) or Despised Icon, or Evanesence are NOT Metal. When to me..all these badns are far Heavier and mor quot;Metalquot; than stuff like Whitesnake, Warrent or the llike. Or even some of the founding Metal Bands like Deep Purple (who I love)Anyhow... what are your thoughts....?MQ- What is a band you consider Metal that others don't?

Answer:

The description above is pretty good, Metal is music that is generally harder and more aggressive than rock. I have also noticed that a lot of Prog and Goth metal have darker lyrics and they usually say something, tell a story, etc. Unlike Top 40. Other genres are: Progressive Metal : Dream Theater, Kamelot, Vanden Plas Gothic Metal: Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Lullacry Symphonic Metal: Rhapsody, Lucca Turreli
wow... metal is a big category. From AC/DC to ZZ Top, it's hard to explain, you see. I just read a great book called Bang Your Head by David Konow that covers a lot, and VH1's Heavy: The Story of Metal series is really informative
metal is just a music term generally meaning harder than rock. Heavy metal is pretty much the same thing. Bands like Metallica, Korn, stuff like that. Death metal is usually harder with lots of grunting insted of real lyrics... like nothingface and cannibal corpse. I don't really know what nu-metal is. There's a lot more sub-genres of metal, like industrial (static X), or hardcore (3 inches of blood),
There's tons of genres relating to metal. Read this Wikipedia article. It gives a good amount of info.
This emerged in the late 70's just after the beginnings of metal. Bands like Motorhead and Venom, (and early-Iron Maiden), are the archetypes. Glam/Hair Metal: Pop music metal in the 80's highly focused on image and power ballads. Bands like Motley Crue and Poison are the archetypes of this genre. Thrash/Speed Metal: Faster more aggressive metal than anything that came before it. Jerky tempo changes and very percussive in sound. Bands like early Metallica and Slayer are the archetypes. Power Metal: Melodic and driving metal with some classical music influence.
