Answer:

Use cardboard as you base. Use pipe cleaners or foam or straws to guide the marbles. Make the guiders stick by using glue. Have Fun!
Lightning is a electronic charge. Charge always prefers to travel in the shortest path and also because the rod is a conductor the charge is attracted towards it. The lightning rod acts as a short-circuit for the charge. The lightning rod of the house is grounded, so the charge directly goes to earth.
Studded tires don't help much on snow, and are worse than regular tires on dry roads and much worse then regular tires on wet roads, they're really only good for icy roads. Non-studded tires are very close to the performance of studs on most ice (studs have the edge on wet ice when temperatures are near the freezing point of water), and outperform studded tires in all other conditions. For the kind of driving conditions you're going to get in Denver, I'd get a set of quality dedicated winter tires for all 4 wheels. Something like the Bridgestone Blizzak or Michelin X-Ice. If you're willing to wait until the roads are plowed after a heavy snowfall, you can even get by with a set of all-season's that are rated for snow use.
