Meh. It's do-able. Good luck to him.
I have been a professional installer and dealer of electronic security systems for over 40 years. A proper alarm system for the home should be installed by a professional. Anything else that I have ever seen offered as a simple do-it-yourself system is nothing more than a toy from my point of view. To put it into perspective, you are investing in something that can potentially save your family from harm, and even death. Wouldn't you want to invest your time effort and money in something that will do the very best job for you? I have seen many people who will spend more money on personal electronics, or items for their home such as TV sets, and computers than they ever will on any worthwhile security system. I definitely don't recommend purchasing a security system on line. I also don't recommend attempting to install one yourself unless you are adept at installing electronics, and work in a similar trade at the very least. A professional security system is meant to summon the local police to your door when they are needed. Unfortunately, too many systems that are improperly installed or maintained end up sending the police out on false dispatches, and the result can be an unnecessary drain on police resource's that could be put to better use. So if you are a good community spirited person you will do the right thing and seek out a professional installer for your home security system. There are good products out there from manufacturers like DSC, Honeywell, ITI, G. E and Napco. All of these manufacturers distribute their products all over North America and the rest of the world My personal favourites come from Honeywell, and DSC. But even the very best products are only as good as the guy who installs it.
