A windshield wiper question, for my Northern friends?

1998 GMC K1500Last winter, a block of ice broke loose and slid down from the roof of my truck. It wedged under the driver‘s side wiper arm. Now that arm sits too tall, and the passenger side sits too low. Is there an external adjustment to this? The splines have a keyway, so it ain‘t as simple as just picking up the arms and repositioning them. The shop manual skips this topic entirely. Surfing on Google has yielded generic fixes that don‘t really seem to apply to my truck. So I figured I‘d ask a yankee. You guys deal with this every winter, right? What‘s the quick easy fix? Or am I stuck with pulling the cowling off, and realigning these things from underneath?

Answer:

The mechanism is under the vent intake screen. If they seem secure and not loose you can just pop off the one you want to adjust from the spline and push it back on where you want it. Sounds like it may have stripped on the shaft so check the splines when you have it off in case you need to replace the wiper arm. it could have cracked and split apart some. Minnesota had a winter about as warm as the south last year. I like the north but still consider us all Americans!
If you have a guide pin and there is only one way for the blades to be mounted then there are no adjustments. Either something has bent underneath or if there is an adjustable turnbuckle then maybe it has stripped the threads and moved. You'll have to look at everything to determine where the damage occurred and what is needed to fix it. But if you want a Yankee solution: Cut the arm and weld it back in the position you like. Hope this helps. 'av'a g'day mate. )
Not familiar with how your truck is designed but typically both wipers are controlled by a mechanical linkage from the electric wiper motor, unless it is vacuum operated. Something (ice) has bent that linkage. I don't think it is a stripped spline or you would have mentioned that they don't work any more. I think you're going to have to get to wherever the linkage is and unbend it. So wait. does this mean the Mexicans are right to put a hood over the windshield and paint a rooster on the drivers door?
