Can you give some names of some Ferrous Metals? Thanks =)
the difference between metals and non-metals are that the atom of a non-metal that non-metal radily accepts electron or give one but metals do. Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity. 2. They are malleable and ductile in their solid state. 3. They show metallic luster. 4. They are opaque. 5. They have high density. 6. They are solids (except mercury) 7. They have crystal structure in which each atom is surrounded by eight to twelve near neighbors 8. They have one to four valence electrons. 9. They have low ionization potentials; they readily lose electrons. 10. They are good reducing agents. 11. They have hydroxides which are bases or amphoteric. 12. They are electropositive.
Differences Between Metals And Nonmetals
Metals are those that belong to the left side of the periodic table, those that have the S orbitals filled or partially filled but have unfilled P orbitals, metallic character goes up from the top of the periodic table downwards and going from the right to left. Usually they are at the S, D and F blocks of the periodic table. Non-metals have S orbitals filled and have filled or unfilled P orbitals. They are also located on the right side of the periodic table, on the P block
There are a lot. A simple thing, which I think you're asking, is about their valence electrons. Electrons in an atom rotate it in an orbit. Only a certain number of electrons can be held in each orbit. All atoms 'want' to have a full outer shell, that is they will react with anything until they cannot react any further (by virtue of having a full outer shell). Metals have fewer valence electrons, so they lose them to form positive ions. Non-metals have lots, so they gain some to fill their orbit, and form a negative ion. Then the two are attracted together and form a salt (ionic compound).
Metals have 1-3 electrons in the outer shell of each atom. Non metals usually have 4-8 electrons in their outer shell.
