Answer:

Local smoke detectors found in most homes are for one purpose, to alert you and your family of fire and get out. Some homes have security systems (like Brinks or ADT) with attached smoke detectors. When the detector goes off it alerts a central station that you pay monthly that there is a fire. They call you and the fire department. Businesses, size is dependent via city code but usually over 10,000 sq. ft, are required to be alarmed to the FD disptching center. This is for life safety of the workers and other occupants. When these go off the FD Dispatcher automatically dispatches the FD and they respond. If your room is in a home they most likely will not come. If your room is in an apartment building they may come, but sometimes only the detectors in the hallway trip the system and the ones inside the rooms are local only. This minimizes false activations and evacuating a whole apartment complex for someone that burnt food on the stove. If you're room is in a dormitory tower they probably will come.
This time of year as people start to heat their homes, carbon monoxide poisoning is common. Severe headache is the first symptom, pinker than normal skin is another as the carbon monoxide replaces the oxygen in your blood. See if going outside and breathing in deeply several times relieves the pain. If it does, get to an E.R. and be treated with oxygen to counteract the carbon monoxide and have the fire dept clear your home/office ect. and test the levels before you or anyone re-enters. Get a carbon monoxide detector for your environment.
