Neverwin has the most possible cause. If you can smell smoke, then the detector is doing its' job - something is creating the smell of smoke. Check outside your door - is it only smelling in your apartment, could it be coming through any ducts from other apartments - you can only use your nose for this. If the smell of smoke is definitely in your apartment and nowhere else, then I agree and suspect a wiring problem. Smoke smells have their own signature to a trained nose, so do not hesitate to call out the Fire Service for their opinion next time the smoke smell appears, they would rather attend to a living person than a fried one
